What to do before you list a used PC for sale

Most of the effort in selling a used PC goes into writing the listing and picking a price. The work that actually moves the machine faster, and for more, happens before any of that: it is everything you do to remove a buyer’s reasons to doubt, haggle, or message you afterwards.

A used PC is a trust purchase. The buyer cannot see inside your machine, cannot run it themselves, and has been burned before or has read about someone who was. Everything below is about closing that gap cheaply.

Prove it works, with a number

The first question in any buyer’s head is whether the thing actually performs. The cheapest way to answer it is a benchmark.

Run 3DMark. The free version on Steam is all you need, and Time Spy or Steel Nomad is the right test for a gaming machine. It gives you a score you can put in the listing, and, more usefully, a public result page the buyer can compare against thousands of identical systems. “Scores in line with a stock RTX 4070” is a far stronger claim than “runs great”.

The benchmark does a second job for free. A loop of it is a stress test, and a machine that throttles, artifacts or crashes under one was going to do the same for the buyer in week two. Better you find it now than they do after paying.

If the CPU is the selling point rather than the graphics card, add a Cinebench run for the same reason. Note the temperatures you saw while you were at it. Buyers who know what they are looking at read temperatures as a sign the machine was looked after.

Write the full spec, not a summary

“Gaming PC, 16GB RAM, RTX card” is a listing that invites ten messages asking what the other parts are. Every one of those is friction, and friction loses sales to the listing that already answered the question.

Write out every component with its exact model:

  • Graphics card, including the specific variant and the maker’s model name
  • CPU
  • Motherboard, including the chipset
  • RAM: capacity, speed, and how many sticks
  • Storage: each drive, its capacity, and whether it is NVMe, SATA SSD or mechanical
  • Power supply: wattage, efficiency rating, and whether it is modular
  • Case and cooling, stock or aftermarket

The exact models are also what search finds. Someone hunting for an “RTX 4070 Super” will never see a listing that only says “graphics card”. This is the same list you would write to work out what the machine is worth, so do it once and use it for both.

Do a clean Windows install, with the drivers ready

This step protects you and sells the machine at the same time.

It protects you because a machine you have used is full of your accounts, files, saved browser passwords and logged-in sessions. Handing that to a stranger is a real privacy problem, and “I deleted my documents” does not undo a browser still signed into your email.

It sells the machine because a buyer who powers on to a clean, fresh Windows desktop is looking at something that feels new, not second-hand. So:

  1. Do a clean install of Windows from a USB stick, not a reset that keeps the old install’s baggage.
  2. Install every driver while you are there, chipset and graphics card especially, so the machine works fully the moment it is switched on.
  3. Run Windows Update once so the buyer is not met by an hour of updates.
  4. Shut down at the out-of-box “let’s set up” screen. The buyer creates the first account, so the machine is genuinely theirs and tied to no login of yours.

If the buyer is not on the supported side of the Windows 11 line, the same bypass and Linux options apply here as when buying, but do not make that call for them. A clean, working, supported install is the safe default.

Tape over the motherboard’s video ports

This is the small one that saves you the most grief.

On a machine with a graphics card, the display has to come from the graphics card’s outputs, low on the back of the case. The motherboard also has video ports, higher up, wired to the CPU’s built-in graphics. If the buyer plugs their monitor into the motherboard by mistake, they get no picture, or a picture with no graphics-card performance, and they conclude the machine is broken.

It happens constantly, and it turns a working sale into a refund request. Put a small piece of tape over the motherboard’s HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, or drop a note in the box, so the buyer’s cable can only go where the picture actually is. It costs nothing and heads off the most common post-sale message a PC seller gets.

Take photos that build trust, not ones that hide things

Photos are where most used listings quietly lose money, because a bad photo does not just fail to sell, it signals that something is being hidden.

Clean it first. Dust is the cheapest thing on this entire list to fix and it changes what the photos say about how the machine was treated. Blow out the fans, wipe the glass, tidy the cables.

Take the side panel off. A buyer wants to see the actual hardware, the cabling and the condition inside. A closed case reads as something to hide.

Turn the RGB off. If the machine has lighting, set it to a solid neutral colour or switch it off entirely for the photos. Coloured lighting hides dust, disguises cable routing and casts everything in a tint, and buyers have learned to read a rainbow-lit interior as staging. You can mention the lighting in the text and show one shot of it on if it is a genuine selling point. The clarity shots come first.

Shoot in daylight against a plain background. Natural light near a window beats any room light. A plain wall or desk keeps the attention on the machine.

Photograph the proof. Get clear shots of the model numbers on the graphics card and motherboard, the ports, any wear or marks honestly, and the benchmark score on the screen. A photo of the actual serial numbers and the real performance result does more for a price than any adjective.

Be honest about the history

The last cheap thing you can do is say what you know. If the graphics card was used for mining, if the machine was a daily driver for three years, if there is a scratch on the panel, put it in the listing.

It costs a little on the asking price and it saves a lot on disputes, returns and the kind of buyer who goes looking for a reason to claim a refund. An honest listing also lets you stand behind the price instead of negotiating down from a number you cannot defend.

The pre-listing checklist

Before the listing goes up, the machine should have:

  • A saved 3DMark score, used as both proof and a stability test
  • The full component list written out with exact models
  • A clean Windows install with all drivers in place, shut down at first setup
  • Tape or a note over the motherboard’s video ports
  • Clean, daylight photos with the panel off and the RGB down, including the model numbers and the score on screen
  • An honest note on the machine’s history and condition

None of it takes long, and every item removes a reason for the buyer to walk or to knock the price down.

Doing this more than once

If you sell one machine a year, a checklist in your head is enough.

If you build and flip regularly, the admin becomes the hard part. Which card went into which build, what you paid for it, what the build scored, what it eventually sold for, and whether the whole thing actually made money once you count the Windows licence and the new power supply. Once parts move between builds and sit around for weeks, that stops being something you can hold in your head.

Do I need to reinstall Windows before selling a PC?
You should.
