How to work out what a used PC is actually worth

Most people value a used PC by looking at what similar machines are listed for and picking a number nearby. That is the wrong starting point, and it is why used systems sit unsold for weeks or go for hundreds less than they should.
A PC is not one product. It is a bundle of components with independent markets, and the bundle is worth what those markets say it is.
Why asking prices are the wrong number
An asking price tells you what a seller hopes for. A sold price tells you what somebody paid. Those are frequently far apart, and the gap is widest exactly where you need accuracy: on hardware that is a generation or two old.
Look at completed and sold listings only. On Trade Me, filter to closed listings that actually sold. On eBay, use the sold items filter. Ignore everything currently live, because a listing that has sat for three weeks is evidence of a price nobody accepted.
Take a handful of recent sales rather than one. A single sale can be a fluke, a desperate seller, or a friend doing a favour.
What is the machine actually made of?
Before pricing anything, write down what is in it. Not “gaming PC, 16GB RAM”, but each component with its specific model:
- Graphics card, including the exact variant
- CPU
- Motherboard, including chipset
- RAM: capacity, speed, and how many sticks
- Storage: each drive, its capacity, and whether it is NVMe, SATA SSD, or a mechanical disk
- Power supply: wattage, efficiency rating, and whether it is modular
- Case, and whether the cooling is stock or aftermarket
You cannot value what you have not written down, and the components people forget to list are usually the ones quietly carrying value, like a good power supply or a second NVMe drive.
Which parts carry the value?
In almost any gaming or workstation build, the value is concentrated:
The graphics card is usually most of it. In a lot of used gaming systems the GPU alone is worth more than everything else combined. It is also the component with the most liquid used market, because it is the upgrade people shop for independently.
The CPU is second, but it is platform-locked. Its value depends heavily on whether the socket is still current. A CPU on a platform that still receives new releases holds value far better than an equivalent chip on a dead socket, even if raw performance is similar.
Everything else is thinner than you would think. Motherboards depreciate hard unless they are high-end or on a scarce socket. RAM is close to a commodity. Storage prices track new-drive prices, which usually fall. Cases and coolers move slowly and cheaply. Power supplies hold value reasonably if they are a known-good brand with life left in them.
The practical consequence: get the graphics card and CPU right and you are most of the way to an accurate number. Spending an hour pricing the case is not a good use of an hour.
What do you subtract?
The sum of the parts is a gross figure. What lands in your pocket is less.
Selling fees. Marketplace success fees come off every sale, and if you part out you pay them on each transaction rather than once. Payment processing takes its own cut. Check the current rates rather than assuming, because they change.
Shipping and packaging. A graphics card needs real packaging. A full tower is expensive and risky to send, which is why whole systems often sell locally for less than their parts would fetch shipped.
Your time. A part-out might be six listings, six sets of questions, six packages. If that takes a full weekend, the extra return has an hourly rate attached, and sometimes it is a poor one.
Risk. Some percentage of sales go wrong: a return, a dispute, a part that dies in transit. Price with a margin for it rather than assuming every sale is clean.
Whole unit or part out?
The rule of thumb that survives contact with reality:
Sell whole when the components are a coherent, balanced system and none of them is individually remarkable. Whole-system buyers are paying for convenience and a machine that already works, and a sensible mid-range build is genuinely worth more to them assembled than in pieces.
Part out when one component dominates the value, when the parts are mismatched, or when the system as a whole is dated but one piece is not. A current graphics card in an otherwise old build is the clearest case: the card is holding the listing price up while the rest of the machine drags the buyer pool down.
The test is simple. Total the realistic sold prices of the parts, subtract fees and the effort you are willing to spend, and compare that to what comparable whole systems have actually sold for. If the gap is small, sell it whole and save yourself the weekend.
What raises the number?
Several of these cost almost nothing:
- Prove it works. Bench test it, note the temperatures, and say what you tested. Buyers discount uncertainty heavily.
- Photograph the actual machine, not a stock image. Include the inside.
- List the exact models. “RTX 4070 Super” finds buyers searching for it. “Good graphics card” does not.
- Say what you know about its history, including anything unflattering. It costs a little on price and saves a lot on disputes.
- Clean it. Dust is the cheapest thing on this list to remove and it changes what the photos communicate about how the machine was treated.
Doing this repeatedly
If you value one machine a year, a spreadsheet is fine.
If you are buying, building and flipping regularly, the problem changes shape. You need to know what you paid for each part, which build it ended up in, what the build sold for, and therefore what you actually made. Once parts move between builds, get sold separately, or sit in a drawer for six months, the spreadsheet stops telling you the truth.

- Should I sell a used PC whole or part it out?
- Parting out almost always returns more money, because each buyer pays for the one component they want rather than for a compromise. It also takes more listings, more messages, more packaging and more time, and you can be left holding the parts nobody wants. Sell whole when the system is coherent and the parts are mid-range. Part out when one component, usually the graphics card, is worth more than the rest combined.
- Does it matter if the graphics card was used for mining?
- It matters to buyers, so it matters to the price. Many will not buy a card they know was mined on, and some will pay less for one. Cards that ran mining workloads often ran at steady moderate temperatures rather than the repeated heat cycling of gaming, so the wear is not necessarily worse, but the market prices on perception. Be honest about it and price accordingly.
- How much does the original box matter?
- Less than people expect on a whole system, more than people expect on individual components. Boxed retail parts with the accessories still present sell faster and hold a small premium, mostly because the box signals the item was looked after and makes shipping safer. It is not worth chasing a replacement box, but it is worth keeping the ones you have.
- What is an untested or non-working PC worth?
- Value it as the sum of the parts you can prove work, and treat everything unproven as close to zero. Buyers price unknown faults pessimistically, because a system that will not POST could be a dead motherboard, a dead CPU, a dead power supply, or nothing at all. Half an hour spent bench testing usually moves the price more than any other half hour you can spend.
